Looks like you're taking a couple of cues from the Longsword design. A big part in helping your stuff look better is the lighting. One of my techniques is to have a main light like you have (Either white or some other warm color), and then a darker and cooler-colored light to illuminate the darker parts of the scene.
You have some nice bump-mapping for the hull texture, or at least it looks like bump-mapping. The more beveled edges can get the better.
Overall, nice work, can't wait to see a more completed project!

The three questions to consider: Who are you? What do you want? Why are you here?
It was inspired by the Longsword. I've been trying to think of a theme for my Earth ships and the Longsword is very close to what I had imagined. So I'm experimenting with the design elements and tweaking around with them. Hope you don't mind. This shot was just to show the model, there are no lights in yet, but I will keep those tips in mind. Thank you. If by bump-mapping you mean using bump, then yes. Still learning the jargon sorry. Finished with the mapping, just need to add the navigation lights and guns, texture those and add lights.

When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community.
